A Note On Charging Your Batteries And Run Times
Due to the size of the Humber Foton, we can’t put enough solar panels on the boat to have the solar panels act as the sole battery charging source. The solar panels will top up your batteries while you are under way as well as fully charge your batteries during the week if you are a weekend boater. The supplied charger will recharge the batteries overnight so you are ready to go the next day. If you have looked at the “How Far and How Fast” 1.5 hours at full speed for the 6 hp motor may not seem a long time but ask yourself how often are you, in a small boat, zipping along for more than 20 or 30 minutes at a time. If you are thinking of crossing an ocean, perhaps the Foton isn’t for you, but if you do your boating or fishing on small lakes and rivers, it’s ideal!
Just backing off the throttle by a little bit will dramatically add to your travel time. At half throttle, with your solar panels, depending on conditions, you should be able to happily putt along for the entire day. Just make sure you are pointed towards home as the sun starts to go down!
Don’t forget that any time the boat is not in motion, your solar panels are working for you, charging up your batteries or the equivalent to your dirty gas motor’s fuel tank so you are constantly refueling. Just try that trick with your gas motor!
